Gareth Nash Ceramics

CV

I am a graduate of the Royal College of Art and currently artist in residence at Base Art Studio and Workshop, Taff's Well, Cardiff.  I am researching the history of the figurative horse in ceramics.  I also research the local ceramic history of Thomas Pardoe's enamel painting and ceramic production at Nantgarw China Works.  This heritage is unique to South Wales and I work towards inspiring future ceramic artists in the surrounding valleys who are interested in a creative career by developing ceramic surface embellishment workshops and sculpting courses.

Through the award of an Arts Council of Wales production grant in 2015, I produced a solo exhibition that celebrates the figurative Horse in ceramics using production techniques of the Tang Dynasty combined with surface decoration inspired by William Billingsley.  This allowed me to unite historical references with sensitive issues relating to the human condition to explore themes of gender and sexuality.  I use the symbolism of the horse's side saddle to discuss gender dysphoria to engage minority and underrepresented groups within ceramics using the plasticity of clay and push the boundaries of its qualities as an expressive medium.  It is important for me to show that clay can communicate human emotions to move and open up discussion with viewers.

I am working to develop my career as a professional ceramicist and build upon the work produced by my Arts Council of Wales grant to become an emerging artist working towards an international reputation.  Since this grant I have been able to exhibit in Germany, Netherlands and China.  I am a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy, RCA, Conwy.   'Clay Horses' has also inspired me to research deeper into the unique history of the horse in ceramics and I would like to produce a book and develop a PhD proposal.  Through this research I have also been able to write and publish articles in international ceramic magazines.  I am passionate about promoting ceramic education and have taken part in BBC radio Wales interviews and programs broadcast on S4C.
